Paeonol is a phenolic substance found in the cortex of the Moutan peony as stated by the International Journal of Molecular Sciences. When ingested, it exhibits various pharmacological properties according to National Regeneration Research Journal. Such include antibiotic properties to destroy bacteria and suppress their growth, analgesic properties for pain relief and anti-inflammatory qualities to curb excess inflammation in the body, which could disrupt the immune system. The substance has been in use for long as one of the remedies in traditional Chinese medicine.
Taking Paeonol dietary supplements has various health benefits. Firstly, it protects against neurodegenerative diseases. Results of a study carried out to demonstrate this fact were published in the International Journal of molecular sciences, Vol.16(4), 2015. During the study, the researchers sought to examine the anti-neuroinflammatory effects of Paeonol. The researchers found out that the substance reduces inflammatory molecules in the immune cells of the central nervous system, keeping the brain healthy. Secondly, Paeonol is useful in gastric cancer therapy. World Journal of Gastroenterology vol.16 (35), 2010 published a report on a study carried out to support the claim. It sought to investigate anti-tumor properties of Paeonol. The researchers found out that administration of Paeonol inhibits tumour growth and suppresses proliferation of cells. It induces apoptosis in gastric cancer cells within 48 hours of ingestion. Thirdly, Paeonol prevents against cardiovascular diseases. A study of this effect appeared in Europe PubMed Central Journal. The study showed that Paeonol shortened the cardiac action potential duration, thus controlling the contraction of ventricles and the atria. By this, it improves ventricular functions and reduces cardiac deaths.
Paeonol supplements are found in the form of capsules. Clinical studies have indicated that a daily dosage of 250-300 mg of Paeonol is effective in boosting the health of human beings. However, this amount may vary from one condition to another. For example, 160 mg dose of the Paoenol capsule is required for prevention of heart diseases. 100mg dosage twice a day is enough to produce analgesic effects, especially for abdominal and post-operative pain. In case the dosage does not achieve desired results, consult with a health care provider on how much to increase without putting your health at risk.
Paeonol side effects
Dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting and constipation are some of the side effects that you may experience after taking Paeonol supplements. Such effects are however mild and they usually go away with time as the body adapts to the substance. If the effects persist or become worse, tell your doctor so that a solution can be found. Staying hydrated can help alleviate some of these symptoms. In case of adverse side effect such as difficulty in breathing, get medical help immediately as it could indicate an allergic reaction.
Inappropriate use of Paeonol could result in damage to organs and disrupt normal functioning of the body. For this reason, the supplement is not supposed to be given to newborn babies. Pregnant mothers should consult with a specialist before taking the supplement. It is not suitable for use during menstruation and in cases of blood deficiency as it could lead to excessive bleeding.
