How cytisine works:
"Cytisine has some limitations. It works well for a short term, from one hour to four hours. After four hours, the action decreases. After 12 hours, the action is no longer there," Rahman said. "We need some new drug that is long-acting, so that you could take, say, two pills in a day to cover for 24 hours."
Each tablet contains 1.5 mg cytisine. A smoker trying to quit should take 6 tablets per day for 3 days after quit date, and then reduce to 2 tablets per day until the 25th day, which is the end of the treatment.
The high doses may provoke nausea, vomiting, dizziness, tachycardia and muscle weakness. These effects pass quickly after the dose is decreased.
